SOUTH OF FREEDOM
Mississippi in the 1960's

These photos were taken in Southern Mississippi during the late 1960's. Prosperity and Peace Streets are located in Jackson, Mississippi. Other photos were shot in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, home of the University of Southern Mississippi. The college mascot has since been changed, but at that time was "General Nat", a.k.a. Nathaniel Bedford Forrest - known as a slave trader, confederate army general, founder and early leader of the Ku Klux Klan and namesake of Forrest Gump. The Forrest County Action Committee, Mobile Street, Hattiesburg, was very active in the civil rights movement in the 60's, and appears as a safe haven for author John Howard Griffin in his 1961 book Black Like Me.
