Norwich
Norwich was an early center for industry in New York State. In 1807, Chenango County chose to open the county courthouse and jail in Norwich. The town grew even more with the Chenango County Canal and factories along the route. Some of the industry included carriages, pianos, and foundries. One of the most important industries was the Norwich Pharmaceutical Company. This created a large amount of wealth in Norwich. The Courthouse District has mostly brick, Greek Revival, three-story commercial and government buildings. There are also parks in the district.

Significant Structures
Chenango County Courthouse, 1837. Constructed on the site of the first log cabin built in Norwich. A two-story grey stone building with Greek Revival elements.
County Clerk's Office, 1852

Masonic Temple, 1878. The tallest building in the district, it is a 5-story brick structure with mansard roof and cast iron first floor store front. It was built by William Breese, a prominent citizen of Norwich.
Congregational Church, 1861. The first organized church in Norwich. The original building burned in 1858.
