Sacred Sites Open House Weekend

25 Houses of worship throughout Binghamton, Johnson City, Endwell and Endicott are welcoming visitors on Sunday, May 18 in conjunction with a state-wide Sacred Sites Open House weekend.

Following is a list of participating sties. Please note, each site has its own opening and closing time.

BINGHAMTON NORTH SIDE AND DOWNTOWN

1- CENTENARY-CHENANGO STREET UNITED METHODIST
438 Chenango St. Open 11:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.
100 year old edifice is a landmark on the North Side of Binghamton. The stained glass windows are from the Haskins Studios in Rochester, N.Y. and are original to the building. Centenary United Methodist Church combined with Chenango St. United Methodist Church to form this church community. The interior has been maintained in its original appearance.

2- CHURCH OF ST. PAUL
282 Chenango St. Open 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Truman I. Lacey & Sons were the architects in 1905. It is in the cruciform style with dual square flanking towers of different heights. The facade contains a triple door entrance with the central entrance higher than the side entrances.

3- ST. MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION
192 Court St. Open 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Constructed in Romanesque Style with two square towers at either corner of the facade. The towers are ornamented with cruciform finials. T. I. Lacey & Son designed the church between 1893 and 1894.

4- CHRIST EPISCOPAL
10 Henry St. Open 11:30am to 2:00p.m.
Architect Richard Upjohn designed plans for this bluestone, Gothic style church in 1853. The oldest congregation in Binghamton, Joshua Whitney was an early member. Spire was added in 1903.


BINGHAMTON CLINTON AND PROSPECT STREET AREA

5 - ST. MICHAEL'S ORTHODOX
280 Clinton St. Open 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
"It has been said that Icons are literally windows into heaven. Come and behold the glory of our Lord and His Saints through the magnificent Icons of St. Michael's Orthodox Church." Fr. Dutko.

6- JOHN HUS PRESBYTERIAN
47 Glenwood Ave. Open 12:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Czech inscriptions and chalice motif throughout church. Congregation is proud of their church as a place of worship in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Choir sings Lord's Prayer (Otce Nas) in Czech during open house.

7- CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY
346 Prospect St. Open 11:00 a.m.- 1:00p.m.
Romanesque style with long main section that terminates in apse containing main altar at rear, north east elevation. Facade contains large rose window. Church has Henry Keck stained glass windows and Skinner organ. The Church of the Holy Trinity was formed resulting from the merger of St. Ann's, St. Joseph's and St. Stanislaus Kostka Churches.


BINGHAMTON WEST SIDE AND RIVERSIDE DRIVE AREA

8- TRINITY MEMORIAL EPISCOPAL
44 Main St. Open 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Trinity Memorial Church was built in 1895 of New York bluestone. There are a number of beautiful stained glass windows, including the Welden Window which dominates the south end of the church . Also, featured is a wonderful Casavant organ installed in 1960.

9- ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC
11 Leroy St. Open 11:00a.m.-1:00p.m.
Isaac Perry was the architect in 1873. It is of Gothic Revival Style. Stained glass windows were crafted by Franz Mayer & Co., Munich, Germany. Celtic cast stone cross located on east front lawn of church.

10- TEMPLE CONCORD
9 Riverside Dr. Open 12:00p.m.- 3:00p.m.
Contemporary, one floor synagogue connected to Jonas M. Kilmer mansion. Kilmer was a member of Binghamton's business community whose patent medicine industry included the famed cure-all called Swamp Root. Tours of synagogue and mansion during open house.


JOHNSON CITY

11- COMMUNITY OF CHRIST
325 Burbank Ave. Johnson City. Open 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Contemporary style. Walls of sanctuary and narthex are of cherry stripping over brick and plaster. Interior plan is rectangular focusing on dais.

12- SARAH JANE JOHNSON MEMORIAL UNITED METHODIST
308 Main St. Open 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Named for George F. Johnson's mother. Built of Hummelstown Pa. brown stone. Church tower is 112 ft. high with Carillonic Bells. Church is a landmark and can be seen from all directions.

13- SACRED HEART UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC
230 Ukrainian Hill Rd. Open 12:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Unique style is Folk Architecture of wooden churches in Carpathian Mts. of Ukraine. Denysenko Family, father and son, wrote the icons and built the iconostasis.

14- ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX
One St. John Parkway. Open 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Byzantine Style with three gilded cupolas. At the front entry is mosaic of St. John the Baptist and monument to the millennium of Christianity in Ukraine.


ENDWELL

15- ENDWELL UNITED METHODIST
3301 Watson Blvd. Open 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Founded in 1921 and used the old Hooper School which became the First Methodist Church of Endwell. Present, contemporary building of brick has had several additions including a 100 ft. steeple installed in 1983.

16- ENDWELL CHURCH OF CHRIST
3600 Country Club Rd. corner Hooper Rd. Open 12.00p.m. to 4:00p.m.
The building was designed by a member whose granddaughter was recently married here. In addition to a classic looking auditorium and Fellowship Hall there are classrooms, one of which houses a topographical map of the Bible lands made of LEGO blocks. The congregation also owns the blue house next door which serves as a clothing pantry, the Sharing Closet.


ENDICOTT DOWNTOWN

17- FIRST UNITED METHODIST
53 McKinley Ave. Open 11:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.
The red brick church with three large towers is located on land donated by George F. Johnson. Stained glass windows were made by the Haskins Glass Studio in Rochester, N.Y. The historical room contains the George F. Johnson window, where Johnson is pictured surrounded by a group of children.

18- ST. PAUL's EPISCOPAL
200 Jefferson Ave. Open 11:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
In 1911, George F. Johnson gave three lots on Broad and Jefferson Sts. for the church. Windows in the nave are by the Willet Co. and Keck studios made and installed the stained glass windows in the chapel depicting the sacraments.


ENDICOTT NORTHSIDE

19- ST. JOSEPH'S CHURH
207 Hayes Ave. Open 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.
The Altar of Repose is the original altar from St. Patrick's Church in Binghamton. Dedicated in 1930, the church was founded by 117 families of Slovak descent. Slovak inscriptions are on the windows and Stations of the Cross. A grotto and shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes and a memorial to members who served in the armed forces is in the garden of the church.

20- STS. PETER & PAUL RUSSIAN ORTHODOX GREEK CATHOLIC
210 Hill Ave. Open 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Founded in 1914 this is the third church of the congregation. The present brick Byzantine style structure with distinctive blue domes installed in 1960 is a landmark on the North Side of Endicott. The onion domes of the church are reminiscent of churches in Russia. The glistening interior and iconostasis reflects the characteristics of Eastern Byzantine culture.


ENDICOTT MAIN ST. AND UNION DISTRICT

21- CORNERSTONE COMMUNITY
911 E. Main St. Open 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Housed in the former Endicott Bulletin Bldg. since 1962, congregations now uses that building as its Fellowship Hall. Former WENE building is adjoined next door. New sanctuary of modern design was added in 1979 with much of the work done by volunteers. Members will conduct a musical recital of organ, keyboard and saxophone for visitors during the open house.

22- EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE HOLY NATIVITY
312 E. Main St. Open 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m.
Entry to the church features intricately hand carved doors in wood showing the life of Christ. Former Vestal Art teacher and member, Eileen Fanning spent eight weeks carving the unique eight birch panels which was part of a larger renovation which moved the entrance from the side to the front.

23- UNION PRESBYTERIAN
200 E. Main St. Open 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
The church has its origin to the migration of settlers to the area after the War for Independence. A log cabin church was built in 1791 as a Dutch Reformed Church later becoming Union Presbyterian Church. The present edifice built in 1907 of cut stone houses The Doris M. Edwards museum to church history and Union. A 20 minute concert will be presented at 2:00 p.m. featuring Chancel Choir, directed by James Osborne and Tower Ringer's hand bell choir, directed by Claire Bombard.

24- CENTRAL UNITED METHODIST
17 Nanticoke Ave. (Rt 26). Open 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
Last year marked the 175 anniversary of the church. The present structure is of red brick in the Gothic and Old English style. The tower is battlement style placed asymmetrically on the South Side of the building. Of particular interest is the Gethsemane Memorial Window which fits at the extreme back of the chancel over the altar. Lester A. Kaley designed the sanctuary presently used for worship. A historic quilt believed to be made in the 1920's is on display in the back of the sanctuary.

25- ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH
400 W. Wendell St. Open 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.
A plaque in the nave states, This church is the gift of the people's friend George F. Johnson MCMXXIII. Originally built for the Methodist Episcopal Congregation in 1923. Present congregation moved here from Vestal in 2013. Five stones in the church yard commemorate members of the Methodist Episcopal Church who lost their lives in World War II.
