TONIGHT -- A Presentation by the Broome County Historical Society

The Mafia Summit in Apalachin:
Hoover, the Kennedy Brothers, and the Meeting that Unmasked the Mob

Gil Reavill, author, screenwriter, reporter, top true-crime journalist, and ghostwriter, will discuss his new book on the November 14, 1957 Mafia summit held in Apalachin, NY. His visual presentation includes history of the Mafia in America as well as graphics and visuals specific to the summit itself. The talk will cover the Mafia in decades before the summit, thumbnail sketches of prominent mob bosses, power plays within the Mafia hierarchy that led directly to the gathering, a blow-by-blow account of the day of the summit plus a description of the government turf war between the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover and the Justice Department's Robert F. Kennedy that occurred in Apalachin's aftermath. Figures from the Broome County community come in for special attention, including summit host Joe Barbara and NYS Police Sergeant Edgar Croswell.

Reavill's journalism has been widely featured in magazines, including articles on the Elephant Butte torture-murders, the serial killings of John Edward Robinson, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Operation Magnolia, the sons of Saddam Hussein, Sammy "The Bull" Gravano and the Rampart police corruptions scandal. He also wrote the screenplay for the 2006 feature film "Dirty" which starred Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Clifton Collins, Jr.

The meeting of the Broome County Historical Society is FREE and open to the public. It will be held in the Decker Community Room at the Broome County Library, 185 Court Street, Binghamton, with coffee, tea and cookies at 6:30 followed by the program at 6:45 pm.
